I tend to be a creature of habit in many ways. From my wardrobe and home to recipes and restaurants I easily get hooked on "my usuals" and forget to step outside the norm. Maybe it's the wildly bright colors I've been embracing in my wardrobe lately but I've found myself stepping way beyond those normal comfort zones. Here's a look at a few new things I've been introducing to my routine.

I always get excited for February to roll around for two reasons: romance and sweets. I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to random love notes, spontaneous getaways, heart shaped sugary treats and little surprises. I recently tried making these conversation cookies, but ended up making an easier version that I thought was prettier anyways—take that Martha. But I have to say, her dough and icing recipe was perfection. I mixed two different tones of pink with this icing color set from Sur La Table, which was my favorite part. I love how shockingly pink they turned out and the subtle color variation.

Poolside brunch at the Purple Palm restaurant & bar.

This past weekend the beau and I made a quick trip to Palm Springs to visit my incredibly cool grandparents. We took them to lunch at The Parker, played their favorite dominos game Mexican Train and shared some unforgettable laughs. I fell in love with the boutique hotel we stayed at called the Colony Palms Hotel. It had that old school Palm Springs vibe but with an exotic spin. Here are some snaps from our impromptu weekend. Side note: I read my 91-year-old grandmother all the sweet comments everyone made on the picture I posted of her here and it was priceless to see her smile, blush a little and say, I'm famous!

The other day I had an almost melt down when I couldn't find my favorite Theysken's Theory top. I rummaged through my tuna-can-sized closet over and over again only to realize it was doubled up on a hanger underneath a flannel—a space saving tactic I've resorted too. Maybe I'm still recouping from the Holidays but lately it seems like I've been in hibernation. With two big storms and a freeze warning on the horizon this weekend, I'm secretly looking forward to a cozy marathon complete with a fire, hot coco, magazines, movies and comfort food—I literally have a list of what to pick up before Friday. Stuffed Acorn Squash

One thing I love about the winter months are the cozy comfort foods that always sound good on a cold night. And since not all of them are low in calories (baked macaroni and cheese anyone?) I found this recipe to be pleasantly healthy and easy, which made me like it even more. Another surprising fact? Acorn squash is really tasty and is full of good stuff like vitamin C, fiber and folic acid. See the recipe below.

Stuffed Acorn Squash:

Feta Cheese

Cilantro

Quinoa or Brown Rice

Chopped Pistachio Meats

Cut Squash in half. Note: the bigger the acorn the harder it is to cut though, so you might want to opt for the smaller ones. Scoop out the insides and brush with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and put face down on a baking sheet. Roast for 15-20 minutes at 425º until tender and caramelized. While that's in the oven mix the quinoa, cilantro, pistachios and feta cheese together with a dash of olive oil. Once the squash are finished, fill the scooped out middles with the quinoa mixture and sprinkle with any remaining cilantro bits.

One thing I love about designer brands are the incredibly beautiful and thoughtful packaging their products come in. I'm notorious for saving shoe boxes, jewelry pouches, shopping bags and garment bags that are too pretty to throw away. I held on to this Lanvin shoe bag that came with a pair of flats because I loved the patch and black ribbon ties. Turns out shoe bags make the perfect jumbo lavender sachet too. I bought this loose lavender and went to work filling a few different ones that now live in my bedroom and the living room. Sidenote: I'm thinking this might be an easy fun Valentine's gift for my girlfriends too.

I recently caught a glimpse of the Whetherly Spring 2012 look book and had to share the images which instantly made me giddy for sunny springtime days. Last Summer I had the sudden urge to make a blood orange cocktail but was completely disappointed when I learned that they're only in season November through May. Since we've been having a mini heat wave recently in California, I decided to make my much anticipated cocktail for a sunny winter day. I used this recipe that calls for champagne and gin and used fresh picked blood oranges from the beau's parent's orchard. It was a perfectly sweet and refreshing mix that I will definitely be making again.

For a while now my accessories drawer has been an overflowing disaster. Making the best of a small space can be an utter challenge at times and takes a bit of consistent upkeep, especially when I tend to leave my room looking like a tornado hit it—thanks to indecisive wardrobe days. I recently took the time to organize a drawer that houses most of my jewelry and accessories. It's a work in progress but here's a few tips on how I de-cluttered.

Before: a cluttered mess of jewelry, hair ties, pictures and miscellaneous things.

After: I used jewelry and sunglass boxes as dividers for watches and headbands.

Today is our last of four days at the La Quinta Resort & Club and like always it has flown by way too quickly. It was a blissful way to enjoy Christmas with the family and we lucked out with some oddly warm temperatures for this time of year. I literally lived in this new chambray shirt I picked up from J.Crew. It's one of those all-purpose tops that can be worn tons of different ways and pairs with well with everything. I wore it lounging by the pool, stuffed it in my bag as an extra layer when it got chilly and paired with sequins for a dinner out.

This Christmas the beau and I are headed to La Quinta Resort and Spa with my family. I took this picture a couple years ago during the Holiday and it reminded me of all the things I love about spending Christmas there—a giant tree in the center of the resort, nighttime walks, mountains that look as though they're pasted against the sky, playing scrabble by the fire pit, strung lights and Palm trees. Mistletoe, my favorite Holiday tradition.

Now that our Christmas tree is up, ornaments hung and twinkle lights galore inside and outside, it officially feels like the Holidays. In fact, it's been so cozy with the tree lit up at night that we end up staying in and picking out a Christmas movie (see my top ten list here). Adding to the overall festive feel around the house is my favorite Mulling Spices from William Sonoma. I've been boiling the spices with hot unfiltered apple juice from Trader Joes and it not only tastes amazing but makes the kitchen smell like Christmas.

Persimmons add a seasonal look to the kitchen and are amazing in salads.

One thing I never tire of is a statement leather jacket paired with flowey, ethereal pieces. A way of dressing that is feminine and classic yet with a bit of coolness thrown into the mix. It's a look I wear year round in many different variations—dressed up and casual.

Every winter my already-sensitive-skin gets irritably dry. This year it seems to be worse than ever. It doesn't matter how much lotion I pile on, I still wake up with parched, tight skin. So I did some research and found some useful suggestions and miracle products that have quickly turned my dull, dry limbs around.

Tip #1 Hydrate with rose oil, it gives concentrated moisture and helps with redness. I swear by Dr. Sebagh Rose Face Serum and Ren Moroccan Rose Bath Oil for soaks.

Tip #2 Drink extra water and cut down on caffeine, sweets and sugar.

Tip #3 Moisturize with coconut oil after a shower or use it on the ends of your hair.

Tip #4 I love having this Caudalie grape water mist in my bag to refresh my face throughout the day. It's also amazing for traveling.

One of my favorite things to do on an extra chilly December night is get cozy on the couch, light a fire and watch a favorite flick. Over the weekend I updated my Netflix queue with Christmas movies galore and experimented with the best movie night snack there is... popcorn. Since I've always been a sucker for those giant Holiday tins filled with sweet, salty and savory combos, I decided to make my own hard-to-resist duo—truffle parmesan and caramel. The hardest part? Not overindulging to the point of a bellyache.

Truffle Butter from Whole Foods

Fresh Chives

Technically this means I'm getting my greens for the day... right?

Truffle Parmesan Popcorn

Salty + Sweet in my favorite Ceramicook bowls

Truffle Parmesan Popcorn:

4 tbs. unsalted butter

2 tbs truffle butter

1/4 cup chopped chives

1 cup grated parmesan

1 bag of plain popcorn

Melt the butter and chives in a saucepan on low, stir occasionally. Drizzle over popcorn toss with salt and parmesan. I used this recipe for the caramel popcorn, it was easy peasy and ridiculously good!

For my recent impromptu tea party I served homemade chocolate chip scones hot out of the oven. Since it was a rainy day, it was a perfect warm and cozy compliment to an indulgent spread. I'm not gonna lie though... the first batch was a total flop—possible baking soda mishap. But the second batch was just right, especially with some whipped cream and strawberry jam spread on top!

I used a recipe from Rose Bakery's cookbook, Breakfast Lunch Tea.

Semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Always bake with unsalted butter.

Mixing the butter and dry ingredients by hand.

Rolling the dough out to a 1/4" thick.

On the Christmas list: these cookie cutters to make perfectly round scones.

Chocolate Chip Scones:

3 1/2 cups plain flour

1 handful wholewheat

2 slightly heaped tablespoons baking powder

2 heaped tablespoons caster sugar

1 teaspoon salt

scant 1/2 cup unsalted butter cut into pieces

1 1/4 cups whole milk

1 egg beaten

butter, jam or whipped cream to serve

Preheat the oven to 400 ºF. Grease a baking tray with butter or use parchment paper. Sift the plain flour, add in the wholewheat. Mix in the baking powder, sugar and salt. Then with your fingers mix in the butter until the mixtures resembles fresh breadcrumbs. Make a well in the middle, pour in exactly 1 1/4 milk and use a fork to work in the dry ingredients around it. Finish mixing by hand but don't overwork. Mix in chocolate chips. Form a soft but firm dough—add milk if too dry, add flour if too wet. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a solid shape (1 1/4 inches thick). Cut or separate into rounds and place on the cookie sheet. Glaze the tops with the beaten egg and bake 15 - 20 minutes until lightly golden. Serve warm with whipped cream and jam!

Having a mini break this past week was exactly what the doctor ordered. My long weekend consisted of eating pumpkin pie, hiking, catching up with friends, wine tasting, watching movies and sleeping in—pure bliss to say the least! After Thanksgiving I am officially in the Holiday mood and can't wait for the weeks ahead, which will definitely call for something sparkly and glamourous. Until then, I've been loving warm earth tones like this silky Joie top I found at Therapy in Pasadena.

Impromptu Tea Party

Over the rainy weekend, I got a wild hair to have a fireside tea party with my girlfriends. It literally poured all day outside while we sat around my coffee table and snacked on sweet treats, mini tea sandwiches, scones (homemade, recipe to come!) and sipped tea and prosecco. I served two types of tea, one was a Christmas flavor I picked up at the Huntington Tea Room in Pasadena and the other I found while browsing Upstairs at Pierre Lafond called the Queens Guard—love the name. Here's a look at a lazy, girly afternoon that was just my cup of tea.

When my mom and I both agreed that we needed a fun girls weekend together we tossed around a visit to some of our usual locales, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Malibu and L.A. Oddly we couldn't get off the fence and make a decision so we decided to sleep on it and connect the next day. I had almost forgotten about our need for a decision when I got a text that said, Pasadena! I was sold when she mentioned something about a tea house and an old mansion. We ended up having one of the best weekends together filled with amazing food, shopping, exploring, museums, art, movies and making new friends—something my mom is exceptionally good at. In my years and years of wearing denim I can think of many styles that I braved and ended up loving—high waisted, overalls, skinny jeans, wide leg etc. But it wasn't until recently that I tried a tapered fit jean with a baggier fit. My latest and greatest wardrobe find has been a pair of ITEM—also new to me, loving this line!—jeans with an I'm-too-cool-for-school vibe. I love the slouchiness of them and the slightly distressed wash. My tip: pair edgier pieces with sophisticated or feminine blouses and fitted jackets to balance out the look.

Homemade Body Scrub

Every fall and winter my sensitive skin becomes irritably dry and itchy. I rely on moisturizing exfoliators and thick lotions to keep my skin smooth and dewy. Last winter I took a trip to San Miguel de Allende Mexico (seen here) and was given a body scrub sample from the spa that I was crazy about. It smelled amazing and had a fine consistency that wasn't too abrasive yet still got the job done. Turns out, it's incredibly easy to make at home with just five basic ingredients and is cost affective since you can make your own batch for a quarter of the cost.

Step 1: Mix rice flower, soy milk powder, white sugar and brown sugar.

Step 2: Pour into a jar and add Calendula oil.

Step 3: Label. I used mason jars with chalkboard tops from a previous project (see here).

TIP: Add lavender, peppermint or eucalyptus oil for a different scent and feel.

Cucumber Mint Lemonade.

Every now and again I'll have a severe craving for fresh squeezed lemonade. It's usually something that occurs during the summertime but on a recent visit to LA when it was 80+ degrees, my sister took me to Lemonade in Brentwood for lunch and I couldn't wait to have a cold, refreshing sip. And boy did she take me to the right place. I got to choose from ten different types of lemonade, order from a plethora of salads and sandwiches and had a crazy good chocolate chip cookie. Here are some highlights of my newest favorite food stop in LA.

This week's "bits and tips" comes from a little home inspiration I came across over the weekend. My sister and her hubby recently moved into a new house and I had to share some of my favorite ways she dressed up her new digs. It already feels like a home away from home for me, complete with a hammock in the backyard (best-thing-ever), a cozy sun room, giant couches to lounge on, familiar furniture from our childhood home and lattes in the morning made with their fancy new espresso maker.

Purple + Coral

Normally I stray from purple all together. I've always felt that it wasn't my color and it reminds me of that creepy singing dinosaur. But after spotting Georgia Jagger in a rich purple silk top with bright coral lips, I had a complete change of heart. For months I kept my eyes peeled for the perfect piece in that same royal shade but nothing seemed to say "Georgia" and felt more like "Barney", until I found this sweater at a thrift store. Hiding on the "under $10" rack, my vibrant purple craving was fulfilled. Turns out it is a color I can wear and love to wear with black, denim, gold and bits of coral.

Considering the first decade and a half of my life was spent with my hair in a bun—ballet bunhead here!—it's no wonder the classic and easy style is one of my favorites. I remember fussing as a kid over fly-aways, or "wispies" as I used to call them, and making my hair as tight and slicked back as possible, nowadays I prefer my buns to be perfectly messy with an undone look. Below are some variations that are currently inspiring me to get creative in the bun department.

With the recent Indian Summer days, I've been finding myself stumped when having to pick out an outfit for the day. Lately I've been relying on short sleeve sweaters like this cream colored one by Land's End. I love that it's a neutral color so I can layer bits of gold, tan and coral lips with it. What I've also discovered about scoopneck sweaters is that they're perfect for pairing with collared tops. My friends always tease me about my overflowing drawer of beauty products, which is utterly impossible to keep organized. But I can't help myself when I find a new favorite hair spray that smells amazing or a face lotion that answers all my skin prayers, I just have to give it test drive. So who do you think they come to for the latest and greatest tips on beauty buys? Moi. Here's a look at some of my recent obsessions and cravings that are something to write home about.

Philosophy Purity Facial Cleanser—A gentle moisturizer that gets all my makeup off without leaving my skin too dry. And the beau uses it as well! Eminence Wild Plum Eye Cream—Smells incredible and isn't too thick, a perfect daytime eye cream. Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner—I recently had a blow dry and my stylist used this conditioner on my hair... it's never felt and smelled so amazing! GHD Professional Styler—I'm itching to get this straightener that has an extra wide paddle for thicker hair. Trish McEvoy Classic Eye Pencil—Perfect for smudgy eyeliner. Cane + Austin Acne Treatment Pads—I read in Allure that in your 20's you should be using a Glycolic/Salic acid treatment once a week. These pads feel like a mini facial every time I use them. My skin is smooth and dewey afterwards. Essence 27 Bio Revitalizing Moisturizing Cream—I've heard this moisturizing serum is truly amazing so I've been dying to try it. Trish McEvoy Dual Resort Bronzer—An oldie but goodie, this bronzer always gives the prettiest highlight/tan. Hair Styling Clips—I've become reliant on these clips lately. They make blow drying and styling ten times easier. Tigi Catwalk Series Work It Hairspray—I can't get enough of this hairspray. It's hands down the best and has the most amazing sandalwood and musk scent. Activearoma Rose Damascena Oil—My bedtime routine as of late involves a dash of this rose scented argan oil that I use on my hair and face. Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Coral Pink—A sheer and shiny coral that is perfection. Blax Elastic Hair Ties—I love the clear elastic hair ties by this brand. They don't snag or break.

Gypsy lingerie not only makes my caboose look amazing thanks to the cut but the designs are über comfortable. Indian Summer At Home

The recent summery/fall days have inspired me to spruce up the house a bit and at moments install an air conditioner, until then a cold beer will do the trick. I started with arranging white roses in a teensy short vase which led to displaying some favorite sea glass pieces that create the prettiest light next the window. And, while doing some cleaning/storing, I came across an old favorite black and white photo I took of the beau when we first met and it gave me butterflies all over again. Nothing like a few romantic objects to brighten a home.

Just when I thought it was safe to stow away the sun dresses, my wish for an Indian Summer came true. This past weekend was perfectly warm and it gave me the chance to give my summery wardrobe favorites one last hurrah. Besides soaking in the unexpected warm weather the beau and I celebrated a friends birthday, had some fancy beer at an Octoberfest party and went to our favorite pizza spot, Olio Pizzaria. Let's hope for a long Indian Summer!

One thing I promised myself I could invest in this year, was a fitted chanel-esque jacket. When I came across this raw edged wool IRO jacket with embellished shoulders, I knew it was too good to pass up. Despite having a hideous cold, this past week has been highlighted with unexpected sunny days and some new found obsessions that I already can't live without. New short boots that go with just about everything in my wardrobe, cotton candy jelly bellies and the perfect pale lip color. It is so true when I say, sometimes it's the little things that can brighten up your day—especially when you're feeling under the weather.

Aside from blogs, magazines and runways, some of my biggest style inspirations are my closest friends. We share tips on favorite vintage stops, boutiques, beauty products, new designer obsessions and heads up on good sales. At a friend's recent rehearsal dinner, my friend LP (seen here and here) wore a flowey black and white polk dot dress that I was crazy about. I loved the trailing long skirt that billowed in the wind and the exposed back. Thanks to LP, I'm now craving polka dots and gownish long skirts.

Chocolate Soufflé Cake

I'm a lover of just about anything that has to do with chocolate. In fact, I'm not sure I live a day without having just a little bit (or sometimes a lot). The beau's mom taught me how to make this Chocolate Soufflé Cake and it never fails to impress at dinner parties. I have to convince people that it's not store bought. And the best part about that? It's actually a fairly simple and easy recipe (see below).

Chocolate Soufflé Cake:

9 eggs • 1 lb. chopped bittersweet chocolate • 3/4 sugar • 1 c. butter • parchment (or wax) paper • cocoa powder • confectioners sugar

Melt the butter and chocolate over low/medium heat. Stir occasionally. While chocolate is melting separate the egg yolks and whites in two bowls. Beat egg yolks with 3/4 c. sugar. With clean mixers beat the egg whites with 1 tablespoon sugar until fluffy with *peaks. In a large bowl *fold 3/4 of the melted chocolate/butter mixture with the egg yolks and a third of the egg whites. Keep folding in ingredients until mixed. Pour into a greased and floured spring form pan with parchment paper lining the bottom. Bake at 300º for 30 min or until the sides are firm and the center still jiggles. Set aside to cool. Once cooled sprinkle cocoa powder and confectioners sugar on top (TIP: Put the cocoa and sugar in a mesh strainer and tap over the cake. It will give that professional look).

*Cooking terms always intimidate me and turn me away from recipes if I don't know what they are, so here's a little translation. Peaks: when you beat the egg whites long enough that it forms mini peaks on the surface when you lift the mixers out. Fold: a type of mixing. Instead of making small circles or beating, you make a wide circular motion folding the bottom mixture to the top (TIP: I like using a wide spatula).

Shine Blow Dry Bar

I loved getting my hair washed under these beautiful lights!

Ever since I heard of the concept "blow dry bar" I've been wishing and hoping for one to open in Santa Barbara. It's such a simple luxury with a small price tag ($35) and big reward, especially when you can sip a mimosa, have a mini cupcake and, most importantly, relax. Shine Blow Dry Bar recently opened in Santa Barbara and I raced to make an appointment. My experience? True bliss and an incredibly soft, bouncy blow out. Besides being utterly pampered I was smitten with the interiors—crystal chandeliers, heavenly shades of blue, marble countertops and glassware with the signature Shine star on them. I couldn't think of a better place to start off a girls day with friends or just treat myself. I can already tell I'm going to be a regular at this spot!

I'm a sucker for sheer, printed fabrics so I was instantly drawn to this printed dress by Of Two Minds—a line that I've been crazy for ever since discovering it a year ago. I love the splashes of pink and coral, making it a perfect transition piece for fall. Major perk, it looks incredibly cool with my black leather jackets seen here and here.

New Season, New Scents

With the change of season on our hands, I've been craving new scents as a way of starting fresh. I put an exotic floral candle in my bedroom, found extra thick rose scented face creme and recently come across two perfumes that I'm crazy about—one that's a bit heavier for evening and one that's subtle for daytime. I love learning about new perfumes, leave a comment below and tell me what your current favorite is!

Two of my most recent finds, Tom Ford's newest scent Violet Blonde and ActivAroma Rose Damascena face, hair and body oil—I love putting this on at night.

MOR Bella Donna candle that has been filling my bedroom with hints of White Narcissus, Moroccan Rose and Pink Tulips.

Every fall my skin gets extra dry, so this year I'm arming myself with this extra thick lotion by Eminence. I'm crazy about the Red Rose scent and how soft it leaves my skin.

*Beauty Tip. For extra sensitive, dry skin that's prone to redness grab something with rose oil in it. I've been using pure rose oil for 6 months and it's made a noticeable difference.

One wardrobe essential that I consistently seem to invest a little extra in every fall is a cozy sweater. It's a sure thing that I'll get good wear out of it and nothing cramps my style more than being uncomfortably cold. I loved the heavy wool knit of this Brochu Walker drapey cardigan and knew it would be an extra warm layer for chilly days. Over the gloomy weekend I wore it with Mother Rascal Fray jeans (new favorites that I'm crazy about) and dressed it up a bit with heels.

Rosé Nights

The last thing you want to do on an 80º+ day is come home and make dinner in a ridiculously hot kitchen. The past few days have been sweltering, leaving our house feeling like a sauna. So last night some friends and the beau and I set a table up outside, made an easy summer salad and sipped rosè while we cooled off as the sun went down. It was 100 times more comfortable and I felt like I was enjoying the heat instead of cursing our air-condition-less house.
