I recently noticed that my makeup brushes were looking a bit drab. And considering I use them everyday, they were overdue for a cleaning. A makeup artist once told me that all you need is a gentle shampoo and a little time to let them soak and dry. She also filled me in on how important it is to clean them every 6 weeks since they can collect bacteria and lose their ability to blend. After washing mine I'm even more motivated to do it more often—you'll be surprised how much makeup they hang on to and how much softer they are afterwards.
I used a mason jar to soak the brushes for 1-2 minutes in lukewarm water with a dash of Pureology's hydrating shampoo. Then I used the sink to rinse and dab them clean. Tip: For larger brushes drop a pea size amount into the palm of your hand and rub in a circular motion with the brush so that it suds up. Rinse and repeat if necessary.
After a quick soak and rinse, wipe the brushes on a towel and shape them so the hairs dry properly without any strays.

just a tip: you should never sink your brushes and you should never wet them above the metal part because that is the quickest way for them to get rusty.
Great tip! I´m doing it right now! Good make up brushes are really expensive items!
Big hugs!

I wash my makeup brushes regularly but since moving to NY (with very little space now) I've been keeping them in my makeup bag. I cringe at how much dirtier they are when not kept out in the open... must figure out a better solution! Thanks for these tips lady!
Great tips! I really like the idea of using a vintage tumbler to store make up brushes.

just a quick tip! but you shouldn't soak your brushes above the metal part, its a breeding ground for mold!
need to clean my brushes asap!!!
Oh it is so satisfying to clean my makeup brushes! I love when they are clean, soft and just like new!! xo
Ech, my brushes are so gross. Time for a wash! I have this great blue-green glass from Anthro which I bought so my hubby could have a night place to store his eyeglasses in the morning, but he hardly uses it...I'm thinking it may have to be a new place for my brushes, haha!
Beautiful shots by the way.
Thanks, Samantha!

oh no! don't wet the handle past the actual brush hairs! it will end up ruining your brushes :/
I just did this after reading your post and there really is such a big difference. Thanks for the post!

I never know how to clean my brushes so I would use my soap and just let them dry but I like your tips! This is so important too and a lot of people overlook it.
